I’m posting this since I’ve seen a number of issues coming up from using the Beta of Flash 10. One of the larger problems that I’ve heard about is the use of a flash based <input type=’file’> method for flash that is locked now because they made it so Flash 10 can’t use these. It was a security response to current issues facing flash. I understand why the need to block flash from accessing local files is important, I don’t think this will fly.

To roll back the beta in IE 7 at least, use the following link to download Flash 9 ActiveX control.

I was recently asked by the photographer from my wedding if I’d be interested in trying to put together a website for him. It could be something simple, but centered around the photos and gave him the ability to have an online portfolio. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was looking for, so asked that I come up with the whole thing from scratch.

So I sat down, and created the site from the ground up using a custom created content management system designed especially for his site. This CMS allows the photographer to log in, add galleries, add images, manage users and content, and overall provides him the ability to manage his site without having to constantly rely on me to update it. I also found a great javascript image display tool that lets you zoom in on pictures and does some other great functionality such as doing a javascript slideshow for the images on the screen. It was a really fun project and I enjoyed working on it.

Henry Wein - Photography

If anyone is looking for a photographer in the eastern PA area, I highly recommend Henry. His price was reasonable, but we got ALL of our pictures on a DVD after he was done and his photo studio will help you print and put together some really great packages. We had the leather album done and it’s become an instant heirloom that we’re really proud to have!

I was reading technical blogs on other sites and came across an article that was advertising a new search engine in beta. After the whole Cuil disaster, I was curious and wanted to go check it out. SearchMe.com is a search engine that uses flash thumbnails of the site as a preview instead of just relying on the text sent back from the site. Also, with a number of preferences and options, it’s pretty fun to play around with. But how does it stack up to Google and Cuil? I’d say it’s a lot closer to Google than Cuil. Here’s what I liked and didn’t like about Searchme.

Likes

This is pretty easy. There’s a lot to like about the site. The default background is black instead of the stark white (like most sites). I prefer black backgrounds, it’s easier on the eyes. This hardly makes the site amazing, but it’s a start.

Searching for “bizzar” (which is how I determined that Cuil was garbage) returned a bunch of results. not the same results as google, but my sites were listed in the first few that came up. granted, I’m competing with the Insane Clown Posse and a porn site for the name Bizzar, but there’s more sites with my Bizzar and name than others so I still claim most ownership of the name. Searchme did not find all my “Bizzar” sites, but it did find a few of the more popular ones so popularity must be worth something on SearchMe.

The layout is very easy to use. I can see this looking great on one of those touch screen pc’s that companies are pimping right now so that should be a plus in SearchMe’s favor. Or even on a mac. Ran great for a flash site that was probably loading larger images of website images.

Stacks is also super awesome. Basically, you find some sites you like, and you can save them to a temporary list. Basically, if you were doing a search for someone, you could pick and choose which site thumbnails you add to the site (basically carrying the links with them) and then email a URL to someone else and they can see the site thumbnails and links just like you did. This was fun to play with. Here’s a stack I put together with bizzar sites…

http://www.searchme.com/stack/18fe9

One last thing I thought of while I was checking out this site is this… if I wanted to know what content a site held, I could “preview” it because of SearchMe’s thumbnail system instead of having to click on several links to check out sites, oh this isn’t it, then click back. If I’m lucky, the advertisements wouldn’t impede me from getting back to my search results, but on some malicious sites, I’ve seen them kick in when I click off the site. Redirects, pop-unders, any advertisement is rendered null because I’m just viewing a thumbnail and not the actual site. People who rely on ads might be pissed cause they are losing traffic, but I think it will require that webmasters focus on content and not just advertisements. This feature alone would make a search engine in my opinion superior than Google.

Dislikes

Even with the adult content filter turned on, it still pulled the “bizzar” porn site as one of the thumbnails. As I kept scrolling, I found other adult sites. Basically, the adult filters need work. Using this at work, I grabbed a quick screenshot and closed the app down. I don’t want to get busted for watching porn at work. This needs to get fixed.

Here’s a screenshot that I grabbed… NOTE IT’S NOT SAFE FOR WORK!!!!!

Also some of the screenshots for some of my sites are really old. Like, extremely old. The ones for bizzarscripts that show pages other than the main page haven’t existed or looked like the theme being used for quite some time. I can see the challenge for SearchMe being in the whole updating of their cache of thumbnails. Probably a nightmare to manage and maintain, but hopefully they find a decent answer for that.

Click here for a screenshot of one of my old pages with an older theme.

Conclusion

All in all, it’s a lot easier and more fun to use than Cuil was. The results were more relevant, and with a little time, I think the search engine will be the default of the broadband touch-screen pc generation that’s about to overthrow the world. Or we’ll just use it cause it looks good.

WebGrabber is a command line tool I just made that allows me to give it a url and have it connect to the internet and grab the web page returned. This isn’t fully tested, but the uses for this are fairly open. Basically, I am using this along with scheduled tasks to open a web page and perform an action every so often. This is useful for web based scheduled tasks such as monitoring or creating a custom cron solution for a server that does not provide this functionality. If the system hosting this little app can see the web page, this thing will grab it.

Usage: WebGrabber.exe [URL] [0/1]

The URL should be a full URL that starts with http:// or https://. The 0/1 option is to tell the exe to either return just the text, or the full html that is returned by the web page. This is my first little .net app I’ve written, but it was fun. I know there are other solutions out there with more capability, but I was shooting for a single purpose in mind and wanted to make my own. And this is it!

With a lot of port scanners and people attempting brute forcing, I add basic login messages to my linux servers so I can hopefully deter them from trying to run DDOS attacks against my servers. Not always effectivie, but worth a shot. Plus, if your organization requires legal messages for logins, this is pretty handy too. Here goes…

Pre-Login messages
Pre-login messages are handled by the ssh server and are shown after the user enters a username, but before being prompted for a password. To add a pre-login message, edit sshd_config and look for the “Banner” option in the config file. This options allows you to specificy a banner message file that is shown during the login process. For my example, I used /etc/ssh/ssh_banner as the file. Within this file, I added a message that states my servers are monitored, logged, and illegal activity is reported. The default option is not to show any message.

Here’s the list of commands I used…
# vi /etc/sshd_config
Banner /etc/ssh/ssh_banner (save and exit)

# vi /etc/ssh/ssh_banner
This server is monitored and all illegal activity is logged and reported! (save and exit)

# /etc/init.d/sshd restart

Post-login Message
Post-login messages are messages shown after the full login procedure. This can be used for alerts to the user (like password expirations) or additional legal notices. These are a little easier to work with and will probably be a better route to go. This message file is /etc/motd and can be editted on the fly without having ot restart ssh since ssh will alway use it. Here’s the list of commands I used…

# vi /etc/motd
Welcome to my server! All activity is logged and monitored! (save and exit)

** My servers are mostly fedora, centos, and red hat and this worked for all of them. But any ssh server over version 2.0 should allow these methods to show login messages! **

If you make a mistake, you can press the ESC key and then type it :q! to quit vi without saving the file.
6) Once you’ve closed the vi editor, run the command /sbin/services.sh restart to restart the management services. You’ll now be able to connect to the ESXi host with a SSH client.

I use this tweak a lot and i find it useful since most of the companies I work for still use Outlook 2002/XP.

If you’re an Outlook user - you will know that minimizing Outlook will send it to the Task Bar.

There is a registry entry which can be added, to allow you to minimize Outlook to the System Tray.

Try the following…

1. Open REGEDIT

2. Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Preferences

3. Add a new DWORD Value, as per the screenshot. It should be named ‘MinToTray’, with a value of “1″.

4. Close REGEDIT and close Outlook.

5. Open Outlook, then minimize it to see it sent to the System tray!

I think this only works with version 10.0 of Outlook. (Popularly known as Outlook XP or Outlook 2002).

Note: This tip involves changing the Registry. Please do not attempt if you are unfamiliar with making changes to the Registry. You may want to back up your Registry prior to any Registry changes. I take no responsibility for any problems that may be caused from an incorrect Registry tweak.

- Make sure your Sever 2000 Domain controllers are running at least service pack 4.
- Have your 2003 server join your domain but only as a member server
- Do not run dcpromo or install active directory!!!

1. Copy the i386 folder from CD 1 of your Server 2003 CDs to your local drive.

2. If you are using 2003 R2,

* Then you will need to insert disc 2 and find a folder named ADPREP.
* Copy the ADPREP folder into the I386 folder that you just added to a local drive.
* Now you will be using version 31 which is the correct version.

At this point, run the following steps with minimal activity on the server.

3. Open a command prompt and switch (cd) to that I386 directory.

4. Type:

# adprep /forestprep

It will prompt you to press C then ENTER to continue.
Let this run. This should take 5-15 minutes.

You’ll see several “command completed successfully” messages along with dots going across the screen.

5. Next, type:

# adprep /domainprep

6. Next you will run DCPROMO and promote your 2003 server from a member server to a domain controller.
